THE NETHER // Oxford Playhouse // Weds-Fri 4th week

BOOK YOUR TICKETS NOW for the play of the term – a gripping thriller hitting the Playhouse in a fortnight. https://www.oxfordplayhouse.com/theatre/3701/The-Nether/02-11-2016/Main-Stage

Welcome to The Nether – an alluring virtual wonderland in which you can build, act out and succumb to your wildest fantasies. A young detective launches an investigation into a server dedicated to a disturbing brand of entertainment, as a little girl plays in an idyllic country garden.

This “gripping and deeply disconcerting look at the internet” (Telegraph) was nominated for the 2015 Olivier Award for Best New Play. An intricate and compelling sci-fi thriller, The Nether follows an investigation grappling with paedophilia, loneliness and the spiralling moral anxieties of a society increasingly reliant on digital technology.

This new student production is one of the very first regional performances of this critically acclaimed play – a viciously modern story set in an alarmingly possible future.

F R A N K E N S T E I N // by NICK DEAR // at the KEBLE O’REILLY THEATRE // 7.30pm and 2.30om matinees // Wednesday – Sunday Week 5 Michaelmas // 9th – 13th November

‘Did I ask to be created? I am different, I know I am different. Why can I not be who I am?’

‘Childlike in his innocence but grotesque in form, Frankenstein’s bewildered creature is cast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker. Meeting with cruelty wherever he goes, and increasingly desperate and vengeful, he determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying deal.’

It’s 1929. The Great War that brought Europe to the brink of annihilation is over. The Hindenburg Line of 1917 successfully repelled that Allies’ advance, and the resulting decade of stalemate warfare has decimated the continent.

In a fledgling world of new settlements and wandering refugees, Victor Frankenstein is determined to rebuild the world he saw destroyed. Scouring the frozen battlefields of northern Europe, he gathers his materials and sets out to undo the destruction he has witnessed.

In its first staging since its sell-out run at the National Theatre in 2011, StraightFace Theatre brings you Nick Dear’s adaptation of Frankenstein as you’ve never seen it before. Vital questions of scientific progress, childhood, humanity and responsibility are explored in this bold reinvention of Mary Shelley’s pioneering novel.

THE SKRIKER // CARYL CHURCHILL // MICHAEL PILCH STUDIO // 7:30PM // 4TH WEEK WED-SAT // 2ND-5TH NOVEMBER

“Nobody loves me but at least it’s a sunny day. This has been a comfort to people as long as they’ve existed. But it’s not available any more. Sorry. Nobody loves me and the sun’s going to kill me…Some people might feel concerned about that. But it makes me feel important.”

In a broken world, two girls meet an extraordinary creature. It is the Skriker. A shape-shifter, a havoc-wreaker, and death portent; the Skriker is unstoppable and she has come from the faerie underworld to hunt. At once terrifying and enigmatic, the Skriker is hard to resist but Josie and Lily must try their best to keep a hold on each other and themselves.

Blank Canvas Productions, in association with ETC, will chew up time and space in the Michael Pilch Studio in 4th Week Michaelmas. Warning: young mothers and babies should consider staying at home.

auditions for BANG BANG YOU’RE DEAD // by WILLIAM MASTROSIMONE // at the BT STUDIO // 9.30 PM // Tuesday – Saturday 8th Week MT // 29th November – 3rd December

“Everybody in this class is dead meat.”

Josh just killed his parents and five classmates. All because they flicked his switch once too many times.

William Mastrosimone’s award-winning play explores the frighteningly common phenomenon of American school shootings. Through a series of flashbacks, Bang Bang You’re Dead explores the turbulent landscape of a teenager’s mind to tell a story of bullying, jealousy and striving for attention.

Written in the wake of actual shootings, Mastrosimone cuts to the heart of this all-too-familiar tragedy, understanding the truth of the present to try and prevent more in the future.

Due to a drop out, we are looking for 1 more male actor to join our fantastic cast of 7 in this exciting and visceral production. With a minimalistic set and a round seating plan, we hope to bring out the intensity and power of Mastrosimone’s controversial text, which rarely gets put on outside of the US.

Auditions will be taking place across 4th week. For more information and to book an audition slot, please email bangbangoxford@gmail.com

We look forward to hearing from you!

Auditions for As You Like // Corpus

“Men are April when they woo, December when they wed.”

An exiled duke; a runaway in disguise; a wise fool. Court intrigue, mistaken identity and unrequited love bring all these and more together in the Forest of Arden. Romance, humour, and a cast of memorable characters earn this play’s reputation as one of Shakespeare’s most famous and popular works.

In 3rd week of Trinity Term 2017, Corpus Christi plays host to the college’s Quincentenary production of As You Like It. Directed by professionals, John Retallack and Renata Allen, this an opportunity not to be missed.

Musical talent is desirable but not required.

We are also looking for crew members to join the team in the following capacities: production manager, stage manager, set designer, costume designer, technical assistants. To arrange an interview please get in touch using the email address above.

Auditions for London Road by Alecky Blythe and Adam Cork // Keble O’Reilly // 3rd Week Hilary (31st Jan – 5th Feb 2017)

Queenside Productions (Pawn, EdFringe 2016), are looking for 6m and 5f talented actor/singers for London Road.

The result of a week of playwrighting and composition workshops at The National, and an extended work of verbatim theatre, London Road falls somewhere between opera, drama, and musical theatre, with an incredibly challenging score that matches exactly the speech patterns of residents of London Road, Ipswich. Rarely performed by students, the piece represents an immense challenge in that its music resembles individual recitative layered on top of one another, and therefore demands a high level of musicianship from its actors.

Exploring the true story of a community rebuilt after finding out a mass murderer lived on their doorstep for ten weeks, London Road is a fresh take on the 2006 Ipswich murders, a story that – ten years on – is still painfully relevant:

https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2016/oct/17/ipswich-murders-10-years-on-play-film-legacy

Auditionees should be prepared to sing something that showcases their voice in RP or an English regional accent, and also prepare a short modern monologue.

Email londonroad.musical@gmail.com to register your interest and to book a slot in 5th week, and please also feel free to email questions to that address.

AUDITIONS FOR ‘TRACELESS’ // ROBBIE BELOK // SHOOTING -1ST/0TH WEEK HILARY//4TH-12TH JANUARY

“No, we’re people who don’t exist. Or rather, people who used to exist, but don’t any more. This place is for the people who fell through the cracks of humanity… for those who have walked the world but left no trace.”

From the company who brought you ‘Richard II’ at the Keble O’Reilly:

‘Traceless’ is an inventive short film which plans to shoot over the Christmas vac (-1st week/0th week likely). Dealing with themes of loneliness, grief and alienation, the film follows two figures as they are set adrift in a world of limbo. With no one else around, they must answer a very difficult question: is a world with no people one worth living in? In applying the Fallen Tree Paradox to the entirety of humanity, ‘Traceless’ takes a thoughtful look at why we place so much emphasis on the value of human connection.

We are now looking for 1M and 1F to fill the cast. Sign up form here:https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScZVuxuiF499n2AZ4ezqQ624K5FtUybxMHf5E_qVwv7POCV3g/viewform

Auditions will be around 10 minutes in length. Once you have contacted us we will send you an excerpt from the script for you to prepare – you will also have the option to perform a monologue.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact cadmiumproductions@gmail.com

New Writing Festival

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS // OUDS New Writing Festival HT17

The annual OUDS New Writing Festival is putting out a call for scripts for this year’s competition. There are three categories:

~Best New Script~

Four scripts will be selected to be produced at the BT studio in 5th week Hilary. These scripts should be of maximum length one hour and have a maximum cast of nine.

~Best New Single Scene~

We are looking to select six single scenes for the opening gala which last year was held in the Michael Pilch Studio. This has been a monologue category in the past, so we are particularly inviting monologues, but we would be delighted to receive complete scenes of up to 15 minutes in length with any cast size. Scenes or monologues from scripts that are being submitted to the Best New Script award MAY be submitted simultaneously to this category.

~Best New Play for Voices~

This category is for plays that are designed to be heard not seen. These will be recorded in Hilary by a full cast of up to five, and at a maximum length of one hour.

You are welcome to send as many scripts as you wish in any or all categories. Please email all scripts in PDF form to catriona.bolt@lincoln.ox.ac.uk AND mischa.andreski@lmh.ox.ac.uk with the category or categories you are entering in the subject line. Please give us your preferred email contact, your name and your college in the body of the email. It is VERY IMPORTANT that you remove all traces of your name from the script before sending and save it under an undistinguished title, e.g. NWF17, as this way we can judge the competition anonymously.

The deadline is 11.59 on Friday of 10th week MT (16-12-16). GOOD LUCK!

A note on North Wall submissions:

We are taking simultaneous submissions, but in the event that your script is chosen for the North Wall summer slot we would ask you to withdraw your script from the New Writing competition.

Auditions for NAKED IS THE REALM // By REBEKAH KING // ST PETER’S COLLEGE CHAPEL // 7th WEEK MT16

A St Peter’s / Christ Church Dramatic Society Production

A true core, or a rotten one? Poor boy, well-meaning, and naive; too quick to trust. I am the bishop’s creature. However sweet the fruits of your green heart, I am the axeman, sent to cut you through.

Paris, 1545.

The Doctor Charles Estienne attempts to publish his new treatise on human anatomy, and finds himself caught up in an obscenity trial… the Bishop’s creature circles, and seeks to trap the Youth in the treacherous web of his own heresy and idealism…

… and Jean simply wants his tutor to teach him his third declension nouns instead of faffing around with prints and scalpels all day.

In a new play by Rebekah King, the true story of one of the most important obscenity trials in Western medical and religious history is brought to life for the first time.

We’re looking for 1 Female Actress (dancing experience preferred) and 11 Male Actors with an interest in playing historical figures and impeccable comic timing. Stage combat experience an advantage. Auditions will be held on Saturday of 1st Week with call-backs on the Sunday. To book an audition slot please email nakedistherealm@gmail.com; no need to prepare anything – we’ll give you extracts from the play to perform at the audition.

We’re also looking for crew, including PRODUCTION ASSISTANTS, COSTUME DESIGNER and SET DESIGNER.

RxJ /// by William Shakespeare /// Pegasus Theatre /// 7th Week MT16

“Love is a smoke made with the fume of sighs.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From the production team that brought you Arcadia (O’Reilly, TT16), comes a radical new imagining of Shakespeare’s classic, and the first ever Oxford University production to be staged at Pegasus Theatre (25th & 26th November).
We are looking for 5 energetic and enthusiastic students to join our cast. Casting is gender and race blind. No previous experience is necessary.
Auditions will take place 17.00-21.30 on Wednesday 12th and Thursday 13th October (1st week).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Everyone knows how it’s going to end. So we’re going to take the play and place it into an immersive abstract space, at the same time seeing how far we can cut and rejig the methods by which it tells its story whilst maintaining its overall narrative. As such we will be playing with narrative order as well as employing dance, physical theatre, dynamic lighting and an original score in a production that will challenge and manipulate the manner in which we receive Shakespeare’s text. The original language will be maintained.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please prepare a monologue (doesn’t have to be Shakespeare, doesn’t have to be memorised, max. length 90 seconds). Each audition will last approx. 15 minutes.
Please fill in our poll: http://doodle.com/poll/ufgugxbcp5us9as7
and email us at prism.oxford@gmail.com with your full name and the slot you have chosen as the subject line.
Auditions will take place at Keble College. Exact room will be confirmed nearer the time.
Auditions for: SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER // by TENNESSEE WILLIAMS // at the OXFORD PLAYHOUSE // 4th Week Hilary // FEBRUARY 2017
She is desperate for her story to be heard. But Violet refuses to listen and will stop at nothing to protect her son’s reputation…
Considered one of Tennessee Williams’ most poetic works, Suddenly Last Summer is an epic journey into mind, memory and malice.
In a new production of this rarely produced classic, well-established Oxford University student company The Experimental Theatre Club will use music and movement to reimagine this dark and haunting tale of a twister mother and son relationship.
We are looking for 7 speaking roles and 5 non-speaking roles to make up this exciting ensemble cast. No previous experience required!
THE BLACK SPIDER & TBC // WEIR, GALVANI, MERCER // VENUE AND DATES TBC
Following last Michaelmas’s The Turn of the Screw, Faded Ink Productions are planning another two operas, joint student/graduate productions. These are:
1. Judith Weir’s The Black Spider, a community opera featuring young people from across Oxford.  Not often performed, lots of fun, funny, a little spooky.  Performing late Hilary/early Easter vac 2017.
2. A new opera based on a true story (title tbc) about a NY Times intern researching Joshua Brown online, the first person to die in a crash in a Tesla self-driving car.  Performing long vac 2017, possibility of touring.  Music by Marco Galvani (Rothschild’s Violin), libretto by Leo Mercer (The Marriage of Kim K, Queueue).
We’re looking for a producer to help bid for funding (from both student bodies and outside grant-making organisations) and make these shows happen (venues still tbc).  Hopefully a pair of fun and exciting productions.  Please email Tim at fadedinkproductions@gmail.com, giving a rundown of your experience.  We’re happy to have a single producer for both projects, or two taking one each.  Let us know if you have a preference.
Auditions for EDWARD II // by CHRISTOPHER MARLOWE // OXFORD PLAYHOUSE HT’17
England. The king is dead, and his son Edward II now sits on the throne, full of radical ideas. The years that follow see a series of decisions from Edward that threaten to break the country apart, all a result of his lust-fuelled relationship with Piers Gaveston.  400 years on, DRAME FATALE’s production (Fahrenheit 451, Pilch TT16) takes inspiration from the tensions created by the fall of the USSR, which magnify the relationships between the public and private, and between the personal and political.
We are looking for a cast of 18-20. We are committed to inclusive casting regardless of experience or identity.
We are holding the first round of auditions on Wednesday and Friday of 1st week, and Sunday and Tuesday of 2nd week. Each audition is 20 minutes. We are asking auditionees to prepare a short Marlowe monologue, and if possible to have learnt it off by heart. Learning the piece off by heart will allow for greater flexibility and advantage during the audition.
Please make a note of what time and date your audition is!
Location TBC, to be posted on event when confirmed. Please email lucy.hayes@st-hughs.ox.ac.uk if you have any questions, or any special requirements for your audition – we’ll be happy to help.
Auditions for THE TROJAN WOMEN // by CAROLINE BIRD // BT STUDIO 4TH WEEK MT17
‘What will I be now? Somebody’s servant. Sewing the names of my enemy’s children into their school shirts, arranging oven chips on a tray.’
The Trojan war is over. The Greeks have won, and all the men are slaughtered. The Trojan women await their fates to find out which Greek General they have been assigned to as concubine. Set in the mother-and-baby unit of a prison, gods, and ancient hierarches collide with a world of guns, television and iPhones. The result is boldly imaginative, provocative, and often uncomfortably comic.
We are looking for 3F and 2M to make up the main cast for a short and fairly intense rehearsal process. We are also looking for 2 actors for two short report style FILMS that frame the play- these will be pre-recorded and played as part of the final production. These roles require less commitment than the rest of the cast and also offer the opportunity to try/ follow any interest in on-screen acting. If you are explicitly/ only interested in these roles, then please say so when you arrive for audition.
SIGN UP FOR AN AUDITION SLOT HERE: http://doodle.com/poll/mpmmc6x6drp8wq52  Auditions will take place on Sunday of 1st week (9th October). Please make a note of your time. Auditions will be held at LMH, but exact location will be posted on event when confirmed. Actors should prepare a contemporary monologue for an informal and relaxed audition, and may be given an extract from the play to read. No previous experience is necessary.
We are also looking for a SET DESIGNER, COSTUME DESIGNER and TECH MANAGER. Please get in touch if you are interested in any of these roles.
Please email kate.bernstock@lmh.ox.ac.uk if you cannot make any of the times, have any questions, or require anything to assist your audition.
auditions for BANG BANG YOU’RE DEAD // by WILLIAM MASTROSIMONE // at the BT STUDIO // 9.30 PM // Tuesday – Saturday 8th Week MT // 29th November – 3rd December
“Everybody in this class is dead meat.”
Josh just killed his parents and five classmates. All because they flicked his switch once too many times.
William Mastrosimone’s award-winning play explores the frighteningly common phenomenon of American school shootings. Through a series of flashbacks, Bang Bang You’re Dead explores the turbulent landscape of a teenager’s mind to tell a story of bullying, jealousy and striving for attention.
Written in the wake of actual shootings, Mastrosimone cuts to the heart of this all-too-familiar tragedy, understanding the truth of the present to try and prevent more in the future.
We are looking for 2 more male actors to join our fantastic cast of 7 in this exciting and visceral production. With a minimalistic set and a round seating plan, we hope to bring out the intensity and power of Mastrosimone’s controversial text, which rarely gets put on outside of the US.
Auditions will be taking place on Monday and Tuesday of 1st MT (10th & 11th September), with rehearsals starting at the beginning of 4th week. For more information and to book an audition slot, please email bangbangoxford@gmail.com
We look forward to hearing from you!
